| Has anyone else bagged this game because of the long load times for
saved states?
Anyone else having that problem or knows of a solution? The five minute
load times are the death of this game on the Mac.

I'm running it on a 2.0GHz G5. It must be a processor-related thing,
'cause it doesn't take as long for me.
I got stuck with the single-player game at a particular point. Now I
just play with the light cycles.

Increase the processor and bus speed. Maybe a 2.5GHz machine would do
you?

I posted as much, but maybe not to this group.
I'm in one of the locations (3rd one?) where I'm supposed to be
collecting parts of an e-mail message. I'm full of health and energy.
Yet the bad things perusing the stacks can always wipe me out before I
get anywhere near finishing them off. And yes, I know about the one
behind me.

Okay, the biggest thing is to keep moving. You should be able to zip back
and forth between sides of the guy who will eventually go out and pick up
the parts for you.
Use your disk, too-- it's the best thing for this. If it looks like you've
missed, use the right button (you're using a 3-button mouse here, right?
trust me, it makes the game much better) to recall it right away. Don't
worry too much about being pixel-accurate or anything, just fling the disk.
Chances are you'll hit what you're aiming for.
Throw, boom, catch, throw, boom, catch, while sidestepping back and forth.
Then the guy will go get the piece of the message. At this point, watch the
little holes where the enemies behind you and in front of you come out, and
nail them as quickly as you can when they appear.
Once you've got the piece, run onward to the next part, and you'll have a
chance to refill your health and energy. You'll get hit a few times, but
you'll be able to recharge soon enough.

What else is there to use other than the disk?? I'm confused.

That all sounds freaking difficult.

Well, you may have picked up various subroutines (the powerups and weapons
and things) that act like different weapons. Make sure you have any armor or
defense powerups installed. In this area, don't worry as much about silent
walking or anything. Shuffling the subroutines to customize your "equipment"
for each area is part of the strategy of the game, and you will need to
master it in order to really do well at the game.

It's not too bad. Takes a little practice, is all. Knowing where the things
come out and being prepared for them will help. You have a few seconds
before the ones in front of and behind you are in range before they will
shoot, so if you keep moving and looking back and forth, you can catch them
before they get you. If you keep watching, you'll be able to hold them off
while the guy gets you
Here's the basic first-person-shooter advice, too: Turn your mouse speed up.
And always run. Mouse speed is important, though. Typically, I turn it up to
about 75 percent of as high as it can go. You want to be able to turn almost
entirely around with a tiny twitch of the wrist. Turn it up higher than you
think you can handle, and then play some early levels of the game until
you're used to it. It'll be difficult and maybe a bit frustrating at first,
but it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to get a good handle on
high-mouse-speed aiming. Once you master that, though, all shooters will
become much easier to handle.

Thanks for all the advice!
I'm using a Kensington Expert Mouse. I've also got a wireless Logitech
mouse available.

Okay, I REALLY dislike Kensington mice. This is after having used two or
three different recent models, too. They tend to be light, cheap-feeling,
and unreliable. I've had buttons stop working on one particular mouse, which
I replaced, only to have the replacement develop the same problem. (I think
it was even a Kensington Expert Mouse-- is yours optical?)
At this point, for gaming, I swear by my Logitech Wheel Mouse. It's an
optical 2-button mouse with a scroll wheel/button. It's USB, and I use it
for all my gaming needs... It's just a good, solid little mouse. Wasn't too
expensive, either, if I remember correctly.
But, eek, for a company that's been making mice for so long, I am surprised
to have been so disappoointed in Kensington's mice. It's certainly a change
from the days when their trackballs were the best in the industry...

The Kensington Expert Mouse is actually a large trackball, but I get
your point. And you're not wrong. I tried to use one of these with a
KVM switch at work, and the switch wouldn't do it. Seems Kensington
plays fast and loose with the PS/2 or USB (I forget which) protocol.

Ack, a trackball for shooters?
I'd suggest an actual mouse... In my experience, you don't get the
quick-flick-of-the-wrist action you could get with a mouse. Your mileage may
vary, but if you're having speed problems, you may wish to crank up the
mouse speed even higher, or try a real mouse...

Lovely! I didn't know that-- I just knew they were cheaply made and had
reliability issues.
