DLed EV Nova this weekend and had flashbacks to playing its
ancestor on my SE/30 in the late 80s. Cool.

I haven't played a real-time combat game in years, and I suck.
Enemy ships can aim straight at me even when they're off the
edge of the screen. Aiming based on radar isn't good enough.

I'd appreciate any basic tips that I'm obviously missing.

Also, what are the best ships/weapons that don't require ammo?
This Vellos thing is annoying.

Is your screen very small? EV will run at any resolution and the bigger
the screen the farther out you can see in the real view (not radar).

Aside from that, practice. But you'll have very little success if you're
still in your starter shuttlecraft or another cheap ship. You'll have to
run missions, trade runs, or etc to build up some scratch to buy better
ships and weapons.

Once you're there, I guess don't just make straight for an enemy ship
and sit there blasting away. Move like a butterfly. Circle. Get missile
jammers (I think they have those in EV:N?)

The best method I have found is to swoop back and fourth all the time
shooting. The key is to have the ship you are fighting targeted this
way any toureted guns you have will lock on to the ship, meaning any
way your ship is pointing the weapon will fire toward the enemy ship.

The Starbridge is my favorite, but I have not progressed too far in
the game, just enough to gain enough money to buy this ship. I ran in
to a few missions paying 100,000 and 500,000 and suped up th
Starbridge, (trade in value was over 1.4m credits.) I found it was not
neccessary to have much more than 5 tons of cargo space since most of
the best missions were only 2-5 tons of cargo. This left room for mass
expansions, armor, sensors, jammers, and retool options that allowed
me to have tons of extra weapons.

But who knows what awaits in the ev nova universe.

I sugest searching for worm holes. . .they can be fun!

Congrats on finding this game... ya wont regret it :)

The trick is a little letter called 'A'. Press it, it will point you at your
enemy no matter where he is in relation to you. Also get weapons like the
rail guns first {dont worry about the ammo man, its virtually free!}. Get
two 100mm rails, or two 150mm rail guns and they will auto target the enemy
as well. That combined with A and you can blow the crap out of most ships
while they are OFF the screen. Or if you want to stay energy based get some
medium blaster turrets, they will aim at the enemy 360degree's. Might want
to try these later once you get more proficiant at the handling however as
the range isnt so crash hot.

I recommend NOT jousting with the enemy until you are better at the game and
have got at least a type C or D Starbridge with some speed/maneauverability
upgrades.

One hint: Take the sigma missions, the upgrades you can get at Earth as a
result are vital.

Oh, and use hellfire missiles, use them judically if you have too, two
launchers and 50 missiles, pumping out 2 ever second from distance will do
some seriouse damage and let you take out most ships much easier. Or if you
want to go the Fed approach... get 4 IR missile launchers and 200 odd IR
missiles... watch them spit from your ship faster than you can count and if
you are aiming well you will take out ANYTHING very quickly.

Once again, this is honesty a shit hot game, I've played it through 3 times
before having to take a break {earth plot, pirate plot, and rebel plot}. I
will be back to it however as there are plenty more plots to play through,
and of course the user mods out there. Not to mention trying to take over
the entire galaxy {have yet to be able to kill off the entire earth fleet...
its just too big :/}.

Crap... now I've started raving about it I have to go play it again!

Thanks for the info. Click or tab the enemy, then press A. Right?

No can do. The plotline I want spends a while where you can't
buy more weapons. I won't be able to reload if I run out.

Ahhhhhh the Velos missions! I cant see why they did that, I've never done
that plot line, but yep you are dead right and I appologise for the
misinformation.

Even so, what you can do now is zip past the enemy, push A while your doing
so and strafe him side on. You will be an ace in no time :)

Yeah. That's probably the easiest plotline to get into accidentally.
If you don't have a reasonably well outfitted ship first, it's rather
hard. Eventually you start using vellos ships, which fly differently
than anything else and take some getting used to.

I haven't checked in the latest versions, but I found that fusion pulse
cannons are lighter, fire faster, have better range, and hit harder
than medium blasters. It was rather imbalanced, so they may have
changed this.

A mod starbridge is quite a bit more expensive to buy than a regular
one, but it's not just a reconfigured version of the original. It's
stronger, faster, and has more outfitting space than a regular one ever
will. I like doing cargo runs (the huge passenger missions you can get
with a liner pay nicely) until I can get one of these and arm it to the
teeth.

Yep. Of course, they're rather hard to get if you take any plotline
that makes them mad at you. At least it takes effort to get them now -
it used to be absurdly easy.

I like the Mod Starbridge. :-}

Ok one thing I would do is use the caps lock, that makes the game move
faster and then you fly around fast and hit r for your nearest enemy and
then it helps to have missles or something like tht are targeted that
you fire from a distance and then close range I am in favour of the
turreted weapons. Also if you your ship can cloak use it and go in and
out of cloak and the right times.

I am not at all bad at taking out lots of enemy ships if I have a ship
that can cloak. :-}

One of the plugins gives you a cloak that ships that are not Polarian
can have, get it. :-}

Also I have done the Polarians and the Pirates so far.

Note if you don't register you can't use plugins and you can't finish a
particular mission string, so register the game!
